Golf video game fans should soon have more options as Electronic Arts announced they have a new title in the works. EA Sports PGA Tour Golf is in development, as a direct competitor to PGA Tour 2K. The announcement arrives soon after news came about Tiger Woods partnering with 2K’s title, and Take-Two Interactive acquiring HookBang Studios.
EA Sports PGA Tour Golf Game is on the way
When it came to golf games, Electronic Arts was a major force in the video game world with PGA Tour Golf released in 1990 on multiple computers and consoles. The original game arrived for MS-Dos, Macintosh, SNES, and Sega Genesis. The computer versions were generally praised for their realism, sound, and camera views.
New editions of that game continued to arrive in 1992 through 1997, with 1998 the first year that golf star Tiger Woods’ name and likeness was used on the product. That continued until October 2013, when EA ended their partnership with Woods and their licensing agreement with Augusta National Golf Club. They released Rory McIlroy PGA Tour in 2015.
However, six years later, EA is staging a comeback. They officially announced EA Sports PGA Tour Golf on Monday, March 29.
“We’re back in the game…” a tweet from EA Sports announced on Monday, with an image labeled “Championship golf is coming home.” The tweet (below) also gives the official Twitter, @EASPORTSPGATOUR, for fans to follow for updates.
New game will be built for next-gen systems
Based on the official press release, this will be a new next-gen golf game. That will potentially mean it’s the first golf game created for the next-gen PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles.
“The game will be built on the EA Frostbite engine and leveraging next-gen technology, promises stunning fidelity, breathtaking immersive environments, and approachable, dynamic gameplay,” EA’s statement revealed.
As far as what to expect from it, EA revealed that gamers can go play “against and as some of the biggest names in professional golf.” In the PGA Tour 2K21 game currently available, gamers could create their own golf star to take on nine different real professionals in the game.
“….golf fans will be able to build their virtual career and experience the sights, sounds, and thrills of the PGA TOUR including THE PLAYERS Championship, FedExCup Playoffs and more unforgettable events,” EA’s press release states.
An official release date and additional details should be on the way in the coming weeks, giving gamers plenty to look forward to. That’s because it will be one of two titles available, and the other will include the biggest name in golf.
Tiger Woods in partnership with 2K franchise
VGR previously reported on the deals that Take-Two Interactive announced for their PGA Tour 2K franchise. In addition to acquiring HookBang, they revealed a multi-year partnership with none other than Tiger Woods. On Monday, Tiger tweeted a brief statement about his involvement with 2K.
“I’m excited about partnering with @PGATour2K and getting back into the video game space. We will have a ton of fun competing on the virtual links,” Tiger tweeted.
“Welcome to the team, @TigerWoods! Here’s to the future of our awesome partnership with #PGATour2K,” the official 2K Twitter account retweeted with Tiger’s message.
While PGA Tour 2K21 didn’t offer gamers the ability to compete against Tiger Woods, his partnership may allow for that in future titles. Additionally, it may allow gamers to play the game as the legendary golf star.
As of this report, there’s no official date for when the new 2K title releases, but they now have competition. It seems there’s plenty to be excited about with the future of golf video games.
