The Madden 22 cover has yet to be revealed, and a release date is still to be announced. However, the upcoming class of rookies from the 2021 NFL Draft is already looking ahead to how they’ll start the game ratings-wise. That’ll be up to the ratings adjustors to decide ahead of the rookies even stepping foot on the field. In a new video recently released online, several of the game’s newest draft picks gave their thoughts on how they’ll be rated at launch.
Rookies predict their Madden 22 rookie ratings
In a previous report, we looked at several young quarterbacks ready to make an impact in the NFL after excelling at the collegiate level. They included Chicago Bears’ rookie QB Justin Fields, San Francisco 49ers’ quarterback Trey Lance, and New England Patriots QB Mac Jones. Of those players, most were showing their self-confidence and guessing ratings higher than most rookies will start any Madden game at.
The same seems true of quite a few of the rookies in the new video. Among them is No. 6 draft pick Jaylen Waddle from Alabama. He’ll suit up for the Miami Dolphins, possibly catching passes from his former Crimson Tide QB, Tua Tagovailoa. Waddle assessed himself as high as an 84 in the upcoming EA football game.
While that’s not too unrealistic, Cleveland Browns linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah went overboard. He asked if it’s possible to have 100 as a rating.
“Hopefully everybody likes me and I get some favoritism there,” he commented.
Other players in the video include San Francisco 49ers running back Trey Sermon, Detroit Lions offensive lineman Penei Sewell, and Jacksonville Jaguars running back Travis Etienne. The future teammate of No. 1 pick Trevor Lawrence believes he’ll get a 94 overall when the game drops. That’s extra wishful thinking, based on future expectations.
The Madden 21 NFL Draft promotion in Ultimate Team brought out player cards for first-round picks. The lowest card was 91 OVR and the highest at 98 OVR. With the program, gamers can test out the potential future stars in MUT mode ahead of their debuts. However, those were cards rated much higher than the rookies will start Madden 22 at.
Which rookies rated highest in Madden 20?
When rookie ratings were announced last summer, the top-rated rookies in Madden 20 were sitting at 76 overall. That rating went to Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Henry Ruggs III, and Jaguars cornerback CJ Henderson. The highest-rated running back was the Baltimore Ravens’ J.K. Dobbins at 75 OVR.
Of course, ratings change as the season progresses and players put on impressive performances. Several of the 2020 draft picks emerged as top stars in the rookie class. Justin Herbert had a stellar first year in the league as signal-caller for the Rams. The Washington Football Team’s Chase Young was a defensive stud. So both players naturally saw their ratings increase.
That said, the 2021 rookies that guessed over 80 probably need to familiarize themselves with how Madden’s ratings work. They’ll need to show what they’re capable of and work their way up to those higher numbers.
Last year, ESPN presented player ratings from July 13 through July 17 on various programs. So, the Madden 22 rookie ratings could arrive within the next several months, giving many a reality check ahead of their first games.
