5 Facts You Did Not Know About The Borderlands Franchise

Borderlands is Gearbox Software’s sci-fi first-person shooter game with RPG elements. Its franchise contains two video games in total while there are rumors of the release of a third one. However, there are some facts about the Borderlands franchise you might not know. Here are five of them.

1) Borderlands 2 better than the original title

Players who have already played both of the Borderlands video games are aware of the fact that Borderlands 2 is better than the first Borderlands. However, what they might not know is that many critics have the same opinion. To this point, Borderlands 2 is considered the best Borderlands game in the series.

2) Borderlands 2 sold over twelve million copies

Gearbox officially announced the second addition to the franchise back in 2011. However, it was released in 2012 and immediately became very popular. Randy Pitchford, Gearbox’s CEO, has announced that Borderlands 2 sold over twelve million copies from the day of its release until the March of 2015.

3) Inspired by various other video games

When Gearbox came up with the idea of creating Borderlands, they had a broad vision of what they wanted it to be. Their vision was to develop a hybrid of roguelike and action RPG style games. They intended for it to be something like NetHack and Diablo or Ultima, all combined into one game. Despite their fears of being a colossal failure, the game was a successful one, and their idea worked.

4) Pop culture references

Although the first title of the franchise was not a fan-favorite one, it had many pop culture references. During gameplay, you can find book, comic, movie and even game references. The most noteworthy ones are the references to “Lord of The Rings”, “Call of Duty”, “Half-Life”, “Moby Dick”, “Die Hard”, “Star Wars”, “Mad Max”, “Pulp Fiction”, “Doctor Who” and “Men in Black.”

5) A place in the Guinness Book

Fans might not have liked the original Borderlands as much as Borderlands 2, but it made it to Guinness Book of World Records as the game with the most guns. The actual number is a total of 17,750,000 guns. That is not bad at all for the least favorite game of the franchise.
