Warframe is Coming to the Nintendo Switch

Warframe, the popular free-to-play co-op shooter from developer Digital Extremes, can currently be played on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. However, during last weekend’s annual TennoCon event (an event dedicated solely to Warframe and its large following of fans), Digital Extremes announced that Nintendo Switch owners will soon be able to partake of Warframe’s hectic space ninja action as well.

The Nintendo Switch announcement trailer that Digital Extremes debuted during TennoCon 2018 (and which you can watch below) confirms that the Switch version of Warframe is being jointly developed with Panic Button. In the past, Panic Button has aided other major game studios in porting their games to the Nintendo Switch, including Bethesda (Wolfenstein 2, Doom) and Psyonix (Rocket League), so the studio’s involvement with the Warframe Switch port is certainly a good sign.

Much like its other versions, the Switch version of Warframe will be free-to-play, though it’s not entirely clear yet whether an active subscription to the paid Nintendo Switch online service will be required (we’re guessing it won’t be since PlayStation Plus and Xbox Live Gold aren’t required for the PS4 and Xbox One console versions respectively). Another element of the Switch port which is sadly not yet clear at this point is when exactly it will be released, though hopefully the timing of the announcement means that Digital Extremes plans to launch it before the end of 2018.

Switch owners will soon be able to embrace their inner space ninja.

Along with the Nintendo Switch port, Warframe will also soon be getting a brand new expansion called Fortuna which, among other things, will add in a new open-world zone on Venus and rideable hoverboards. Warframe has long been mentioned as a free-to-play alternative to games like Destiny 2, but if AAA is more your speed, you can read some of our recent Destiny 2 coverage such as how the game’s Forsaken expansion will be drastically raising the level cap, or how the expansion’s new Scorn enemy faction will have several different archetypes.
