Remember when Capcom boss Yoshinori Ono announced the development of a game called Deep Down back in 2013? Advertised as a co-op dungeon crawl game, it even came with a trailer. But since then, we have heard nothing about Deep Down. As six years have passed since that original announcement and trailer, most gamers have given up hope that there will ever be a Deep Down PS4 exclusive. But now, Ono has brought up Deep Down again.
What Yoshinori Ono Said About Deep Down
Speaking to Eurogamer, Ono said, “The original team is clearly no longer together at this point, but people might have noticed that we’ve kept the trademark registered, and it’s not been completely given up on. Every year we examine titles we’re doing in future, and we bring up projects to approve and move forward. There’s not much I can say about it, but if you’ve noticed we’ve kept the trademark it means we haven’t given up on the title completely.”
Apparently Deep Down was supposed to be similar to the Souls series, but not nearly so punishing. So it would have been (and might still be) an exciting game for those who find the Souls games intriguing, but are turned off by their level of challenge.
Of course, if we ever do see Deep Down, at this point it won’t be on the PS4. Instead, perhaps it will be a PS5 exclusive. But with the way Ono is talking, we will be surprised if we hear about it again anytime soon. Capcom still seems interested in the project, but it is clear that there is no sense of urgency attached to it. So we are not holding our breaths on this one, as much as we would like to, and we recommend that you don’t either.
