In their latest ‘Vault-Tec Statistics‘ post, Bethesda revealed an interesting fact; that Fallout 76 players apparently can’t get enough of murdering fireflies. According to the post, the Fallout 76 fireflies are the harmless animal which has been killed the most by players since the game launched. Unfortunately for those fireflies, it seems a lot of players are looking to win favour from the Mothman.

Fallout 76 Players Killed More Fireflies Than Any Other Harmless Animal
Thanks to the mutating radiation which West Virginia is awash with, there aren’t many animals in Fallout 76 which don’t try to kill you. Between hairless feral mongrels, giant mole rats, and the ferocious yao guai; there’s no shortage of animals which players have to worry about. However, there are some which are harmless; squirrels, rabbits, opossums, and brahmin, for example. Even the strangely-coloured Appalachian beavers are harmless. However, out of these creatures, it is nevertheless fireflies which players have killed the most of.
These large, mutated insects drop Firefly Abdomens and Bioluminescent Fluid, making them fairly useful to harvest. However, that alone wouldn’t account for players going after them with such fervour. The reason why Fallout 76 fireflies have been hunted so ruthlessly is no doubt because they play a role in summoning the Wise Mothman.
One of several versions of the Fallout 76 Mothman, the purple-eyed Wise Mothman only appears as part of ‘The Path to Enlightenment‘ quest. This side quest takes place at the Landview Lighthouse, and allows players to summon the Wise Mothman by harvesting bioluminescent fluid from the fireflies that live around the area. Once the ritual is complete, the mothman appears and grants players a temporary 5% XP buff. Unfortunately for the fireflies, it seems that players have taken to summoning the Wise Mothman fairly frequently. As a result, fireflies meet their ends at the hands of Fallout 76 players than any other harmless animal.
