Avalanche Studios and Square Enix have dropped a brand new trailer for Just Cause 4 which shows just how much the stakes have been raised in the series’ fourth numbered entry. There will be plenty of explosions and gunfire for sure, but this time around protagonist Rico Rodriguez will have to face off against a villain who isn’t afraid to play by the same rules he does.

The main villains in previous Just Cause games have admittedly been somewhat forgettable, but the below trailer proves that, with Just Cause 3, Avalanche Studios is hoping to change that trend. The upcoming fourth game in the long-running Just Cause series will pit players against Gabriella Morales, a ruthless soldier and head of the infamous Black Hand paramilitary organization. Morales and her Black Hand soldiers control the game’s Solis Zone region with an iron fist, and in order to match her strength Rico will need to form an army of his own.
Of course, as the trailer also shows, players will still get to partake in plenty of action-movie-style shenanigans while out adventuring on their own. Zipping through hails of gunfire on a motorcycle, leaping out of a helicopter in the middle of a storm, driving a speedboat off a dam and parachuting to safety, it’s all in a day’s work for Rico Rodriguez.
According to Avalanche, Just Cause 4 will also involve Rico tracking down and unearthing the secrets of his past, reinforcing the notion that the game will be slightly more plot-heavy than previous Just Cause games. Either way, the main emphasis will still undoubtedly be on the explosive, zany gameplay that has defined the series ever since its original inception.
We’ll find out for sure just how much Just Cause 4 focuses on telling an in-depth story when the game launches on December 4 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. In the meantime, Just Cause 4 isn’t the only shooter project that Avalanche has in the works. There’s also the co-op shooter Generation Zero, a game which is set to get a pre-launch beta ahead of its full launch next year.
