Remember the other day when Michael Pachter made a wild prediction that that the PS5 would be priced at $800? Well, he has followed that up with a more sedate prediction for the PS5 and Xbox Scarlett cost. He now figures that the two consoles will be priced at around $400, making for a much more affordable estimate.
Pachter Has Changed His PS5 and Xbox Scarlett Cost Prediction
This time, Pachter was speaking with GamingBolt. The site quoted Pachter as saying, “The specs suggest $500 or so, but my bias is that Microsoft will announce $399 and Sony will follow suit.”
It is worth noting that Pelham Smithers also made this same price prediction previously. So that is two respected analysts who think that the PS5 and Xbox Scarlett will be priced pretty affordably given how powerful they will be.
So how did Pachter jump from saying $800 for the PS5 price to saying just $399 now? Well, let’s put his earlier comment in context. He was talking to Geoff Keighley at the time, who asked him to make a wild prediction. So Pachter did as asked.
His exact statement was, “Have you looked at the specs? If they make the mistake they made with the PS3 and charge $600 or more, they’ve screwed themselves. So I don’t understand it … I don’t know how you spec that thing out at $300 or $400 – I just don’t know.”
So putting all this together, what Pachter says now makes sense. He is baffled at how the PS5 can be priced reasonably given its specs. But he knows that neither Sony nor Microsoft can expect consoles to fly off shelves if consumers are unable to afford them.
So even though he does not know how it is possible to charge just $399, it is still what he expects the consoles to cost. He just figures that somehow, the two companies will make it happen. Perhaps both have figured out more efficient manufacturing processes that help to keep production costs low. So this in turn may make it possible to keep final pricing low too.
