The 37th annual Golden Joysticks event has now drawn to a close, with winners revealed for over 20 categories, including an “Ultimate Game of the Year” award for Resident Evil 2. Among the various gaming award events, the Golden Joysticks’ significance cannot be understated; after all, their results are solely down to fan voting. This year, fans awarded Apex Legends Best Multiplayer, a highly coveted award with very stiff competition.
Apex Legends Best Multiplayer of 2019
This year, the 2019 Best Multiplayer award was a battle between ten different nominees. These included the sports titles FIFA 20 and eFootball PES 2020, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Tetris 99, Mortal Kombat II, The Dark Pictures: Man of Medan, The Division 2, Red Dead Online, and Borderlands 3. However, despite these major competitors, it seems that gamers rate Apex Legends’ multiplayer highest of all. It’s unknown exactly how many votes the nominees each received. However, whatever the case, Respawn Entertainment’s battle royale title won the day. Notably, it succeeds its major rival, Fortnite, as holder of the title. (Fortnite won Best Multiplayer in 2018.)
Apex Legends has had its fair share of ups and downs since its release earlier this year. The game’s unexpected launch caused interest in it to skyrocket, giving it a brief window where it even challenged Fortnite for its top spot, although it was unable to maintain this explosive momentum. Since then, the game has had its share of challenges. Its first collection event was met with fierce criticism, for example, particularly when players pointed out that Respawn had broken a pledge regarding micro-transactions. However, Respawn addressed those concerns, and made changes going into the game’s third season.
That third season has seen Apex Legends establish itself with a relatively consistent audience. Now, evidently, fans still appreciate it despite the release of other major titles. The game’s latest update added a new Firing Range; something which fans have been requesting for a long time. With the season’s first event now over, fans are waiting to see what the next in-game event will be. Indeed, winning the Golden Joysticks’ Best Multiplayer award is a sure sign to the developers that players are eager for more.
