Earlier this week, Respawn launched the Apex Legends Iron Crown Collection Event; their first major event of the game’s second season. Unfortunately for the studio, fans were not happy when details of the event were finally revealed, on the day of its launch. Specifically, fans quickly noticed that the way the event worked appeared to violate a promise made by Respawn about how they would approach monetisation in Apex. Now, the studio has publicly apologised and detailed changes coming to the event.
Changes Coming to the Apex Legends Iron Crown Collection Event
“At launch we made a promise to players that we intend to do monetisation in a way that felt fair and provided choice to players on how they spent their money and time,” writes Respawn’s Drew McCoy; “[…] With the Iron Crown event we missed the mark when we broke our promise by making Apex Packs the only way to get what many consider to be the coolest skins we’ve released.”
The statement comes as part of an official update published on the game’s website. Herein, McCoy also apologises for Respawn’s recent poor communication. (Indeed, had the studio made any details of the Apex Legends Iron Crown event public ahead of release, this backlash might have been addressed much more quickly.) He went on to detail a series of changes coming to the Iron Crown event. These will change the way that players can acquire skins so that Apex Packs are not the only route. The changes will be implemented on the 20th of August.
“Starting on 8/20,” continues McCoy; “we’ll be adding and rotating all twelve of the event-exclusive Legendary items into the store over the course of the final week of the event for the regular Legendary skin cost of 1,800 Apex Coins”. The Iron Crown Apex Packs will still be available. However, this will provide players with an alternate means of acquiring skins. The store schedule for the week is visible above, detailing the items that will be available. McCoy concluded with an apology for the recent error in judgement. He also promised that Respawn will aim to improve their communication with fans in future.
