Following the release of the Cyberpunk 2077 story trailer at E3, CD Projekt Red began to reveal information about the upcoming RPG. That culminated with the release of a huge, nearly hour-long gameplay demo. It showed off pre-alpha footage of the game’s many mechanics and story in action. Recently, the game’s Lead Designer, Miles Tost, spoke with GamingBolt about the Cyberpunk 2077 length and a few other topics. During the interview, he states that the studio will not artificially pad out the game to make it feel longer.
CD Projekt Red Won’t Artifically Extend the Cyberpunk 2077 Length
At present, fans have only seen what features in the Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay demo. Additionally, that demo showed a fairly early portion of the game. As such, nobody knows where the story will go next, or how long it will be in total. Given CD Projekt Red’s history with The Witcher series; fans of the studio know roughly what to expect when it comes to their “handcrafted,” approach to Quest Design and story. While speaking with GamingBolt, Miles Tost was asked whether Cyberpunk 2077 would feature emergent gameplay mechanics; essentially, these would be elements in the game’s design which allow players to do things which the developers didn’t themselves intend.
“It’s too early to really talk about this,” says Tost; “If it makes sense, and if we could pull it off in a way that feels organic and meets our quality standards, then maybe. But we’re certainly not going to be artificially extending the playtime by pushing more content into the game. If it can add to our story-driven experience in a meaningful way, we’re not closed off to anything. Personally, I think our strength lies in creating handcrafted experiences.”
This approach certainly makes sense. CD Projekt Red has a reputation for producing bespoke quest storylines and not simply reproducing the same basic quests over and over, as some other RPGs have done in the past. Certainly, fans would expect a similar approach to Cyberpunk 2077.
