Assassin’s Creed Valhalla has enjoyed an enormously successful first week. Not only did the game’s retail sales figures in the UK exceed those of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War – denying Call of Duty the #1 launch week spot for the first time in 13 years – but the game also outsold Assassin’s Creed Odyssey by more than double!
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Launch Week Success
As Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s first week comes to a close, retail sales figures from the UK indicate that it has had a hugely-successful release. It remains to be seen whether the launch will prove to be record-breaking for the franchise. (Although it wouldn’t be a surprise based on the current figures.) At present, digital sales numbers have yet to be released for the UK, which could paint a slightly different picture. Regardless, Valhalla’s launch week retail sales are more than double those of Odyssey; a massive and, indeed, somewhat unexpectedly large, increase.

This success means that, for the first time in thirteen years, a Call of Duty game failed to reach the #1 best-selling spot in its launch week. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War instead came in at #2 behind Valhalla. Of course, the new Call of Duty may still end up outselling Valhalla on digital sales. However, the digital figures have yet to be released publicly, so we won’t know for sure until later this week. However, where Valhalla outsold its predecessor by more than 50%, Black Ops Cold War’s retail sales fell dramatically; the game’s launch week retail sales were down 64% from those of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare last year.
As stated, it may yet make up those figures and more in digital sales. However, the steep retail drop – in a week when Valhalla achieved a similar 50%+ increase in retail sales – suggests that Valhalla might yet end up outselling Call of Duty overall. Overall, some 42% of Valhalla’s retail sales were for the PS4, with 18% for PS5 and 40% for Xbox. (As Ubisoft sold a single ‘Xbox’ SKU version of Valhalla, it’s impossible to distinguish Xbox One and Series X sales.)
