We still have more questions than answers when it comes to what the PlayStation 5 will be capable of. But we do know that PS5 will feature backwards compatibility with PS4. Now we have confirmation that the console also will support cross-gen play.
It’s Official: PS5/PS4 Cross-Gen Play Will Be Supported
PlayStation Deputy President John Kodera himself announced the news. Even though most players had already guessed at cross-gen play, it is good to have Sony make it official.
Cross-gen play is a huge deal for a couple of reasons. First of all, just as players would have been furious if the PS5 couldn’t play PS4 games, they would have been very upset of Sony did not support cross-gen play this time around. This was a big problem with PS4/PS3, and it is time to rectify it (indeed, Sony’s cross-play policies have been anything but supportive of players).
Secondly, multiplayer games have very much taken over the world of gaming. While single-player games remain popular, there is no denying they have taken a backseat. It would be incredibly frustrating for players who purchase PS5s not to be able to get online and play with their friends who are still using PS4s (indeed, this would actively discourage upgrading, which is obviously not something Sony wants).
Because there are still so many questions about the PS5, we are constantly checking the news and keeping up with the latest rumors and updates. You can do the same by checking our PlayStation news section regularly. We work hard to make sure that you stay informed about everything regarding PS5.
