DICE has claimed the Best Multiplayer Game Award at Gamescom 2018 for Battlefield 5. The majority of the Gamescom game awards were part of a ceremony earlier last week. However, three final game awards were part of a ceremony yesterday, including Best Multiplayer Game. Battlefield 5 multiplayer managed to see off its primary competitor for the award, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4.

DICE Wins Best Multiplayer Game Award for Battlefield 5 Multiplayer
The majority of the awards which are part of the annual Gamescom Awards were given out during the course of the event. The remaining awards were those for Best Multiplayer Game, Best Hardware, and Best Virtual Reality Game. The awards were “evaluated by an international jury of experts” according to Gamescom, and were presented yesterday afternoon alongside other community and event awards. Battlefield 5’s primary competitor for Best Multiplayer Game was Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. The two titles share the same release window, along with Red Dead Redemption 2, and of the three, Battlefield 5 is lagging far behind in pre-order figures. However, it seems that the panel deemed Battlefield 5 multiplayer to be the better of the two, giving DICE the award.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 did not leave Gamescom 2018 empty-handed, however. The game won the Best Social/Online Game Award earlier in the week. Both games face stiff competition; Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice won Best Action Game, Divinity: Original Sin II won Best Role-Playing Game, and Marvel’s Spider-Man won Best PlayStation 4 Game, among others. Some fans have been concerned about Battlefield 5’s changes. However, this award is a strong indicator that those changes have been for the better. Between Call of Duty and Red Dead Redemption 2; Call of Duty is much more of a direct competitor to Battlefield 5. That Battlefield 5 overcame its better-selling rival for the Best Multiplayer award speaks highly of its quality. Fans will be able to see for themselves when the game’s open beta launches in early September.
