As Trial by Fire continues in Battlefield 5, the game is about to get a totally new map set in the Mediterranean; Mercury. The first of two such upcoming Battlefield 5 maps, gameplay from Mercury was revealed in the game’s latest trailer, which recently released online. Mercury is due to come to Battlefield 5 on the 30th of May, in just a couple of days’ time.
The Battlefield 5 Mercury Map Revealed
“Based on the events of Operation Mercury in 1941,” explains DICE; “this map lets you deploy on the coast of Crete where the British take on the invading German forces. Gameplay-wise, Mercury is all about verticality, all-out war, and asymmetrical vehicle forces; British troops have tanks and only a small number of planes while Germans will control the skies. Leverage the rocky slopes for intense vertical gameplay and close quarters gameplay.”
Mercury is classified as Medium-Large map, with a Moderate-Fast tempo. As DICE states, it features infantry, vehicles, and aircraft. The map emphasises explosive conflict, but the vertical elements can reduce the tempo, as players will have to find ways to manoeuvre up and down rather than simply around the map. According to DICE, the map draws inspiration from three maps from previous games; Battlefield 1942’s Guadalcanal, Battlefield 4’s Altai Range, and Battlefield 1’s Monte Grappa.
There are five Capture Points on Mercury; the Cove, the Marina, the Poulos House, the Radar Sites, and the Village. According to DICE, players will need to stay extra wary while playing on Mercury, watching for attack from above and below in ways that other maps don’t require. Additionally, while vehicles are powerful assets, the Mercury map layout can make them vulnerable. As such, infantry players will need to be sure to protect them. The second Mediterranean map, Marita, will arrive in Battlefield 5 as part of Chapter 4: Defying the Odds.
