If you were curious about the setting of the upcoming Battlefield title now that’s its confirmed to have a World War 2 theme – as Call of Duty: World War 2 was before it – fear not. According to DICE, the Battlefield V campaign won’t feature the same locations with previous games and movies.
When it comes to World War 2, there are countless battles that can be depicted in a movie or video game. DICE takes this matter seriously and that’s why the Battlefield V campaign will be set in Norway and Rotterdam instead of places where the biggest of battles took place.
DICE senior producer Lars Gustavsson stated in a press briefing that they wanted to bring Battlefield back to World War 2, but not to the familiar scenes that we’ve played in earlier games or watched in war movies. His statement was the following:
“We challenged ourselves to reframe the preconceptions we carried in the studio of what the Second World War really was.
We’ve played all of the games. We’ve seen the movies. But we wanted to do something different. Finding those stories that challenged us, that made us excited, that is what this is all about. We are going to take you on a journey around the world.”
As revealed by the company, the campaign of Battlefield V will follow the same theme as Battlefield 1, with each mission being from the experience of a different soldier during the war each time. This theme worked perfectly with its predecessor, so we expect a unique experience in this title too.
Two of the stories implemented in the Battlefield V campaign have been revealed as well. The first is a family story set in Norway, north of the Arctic Circle, in 1943. The main character of this story is a resistance female soldier which is fighting “to save her family, not the world” according to Gustavsson.
The second story now has a whole new theme to it, set in the French countryside and the first WW2 bombing in Rotterdam. The “heat of the North African desert” has also been revealed but no more information has been given. It remains to be seen what the story behind this mission is.
