Should You Play Battlefield V or Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’s Version of Battle Royale?

Well, it finally happened. Both heavy hitters of the first-person shooter world have officially been announced with Battle Royale modes. Both Battlefield V and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 will be getting their own modes, with Black Ops 4’s called Blackout, and the new Battlefield V mode called “Royale,” supposedly. It makes it difficult to choose which game to purchase and dedicate your time to if you’re low on cash, that’s for sure, but which one do you really want to end up playing? Here’s what we know so far, based on what’s been announced, to help you make some sort of decision.

Battlefield V’s ‘Royale’ Mode

Though Battlefield V’s new battle royale mode was announced today, we really don’t know a lot about it. We do know that developers are promising to bring us an “experience that we haven’t had before,” but we’ve heard that before. There are scant details on what that means for us, but DICE developers may very well likely tell us more about what’s coming tomorrow. For now, we know from Battlefield V’s promotional materials that Royale has been “reimagined” with core pillars of destruction, team play, and vehicles, and will be unlike anything we’ve played before.

Whether this mode will make for a separate sector of the game or not is unclear at this time, but we know it’s going to have to at the very least adopt the same kind of ideas and principles that the genre requires, such as leaving one player standing at the end of it all.

Right now, we’re not so sure what to expect, so as we learn more about the mode we’ll make sure we update you on this page as well to keep you abreast of what options you may have.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’s ‘Blackout Mode’

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’s new Blackout mode has been shown off to us a little more extensively than Battlefield V’s has, and we know a bit more about it as a result. According to developer Treyarch, the mode will feature maps from the series, and will be 1,500 times larger than the Nuketown map, in particular. We know that characters culled from the Call of Duty franchise will be playable as well, along with weapons and equipment from past games. You can battle solo or in teams, and take to land, sea, and air vehicles to conquer your enemies.

From what we can surmise so far about the mode, it looks like we’ll be parachuting in much like the method players do in other battle royale titles as well. There will be a swath of various abilities that you can use in battle as well, though there won’t be any automatic health regeneration. From the sound of things, it’s going to be a challenging endeavor that calls back on the older parts of the Call of Duty series to make something entirely new.

Which one should you look to play instead? The jury’s still out on that. We don’t know enough about Battlefield V’s Royale mode to make a judgment, but we sure know Blackout sounds cool. Keep it locked to VGR and we’ll let you know more about what we think as additional details leak out.
