Here’s some intriguing news while we’re waiting for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. Treyarch has just teased something unusual for next week’s beta while recapping the first beta on Reddit. Here is the statement, which mentions a “secret new mode”:
“Just because Week 1 is coming to a close doesn’t mean we’re shutting things down … we’ll be back with a second week of Beta action starting this Friday (PS4/XB1/PC), which will feature a few new items that you’ll want to jump in to see. We probably shouldn’t reference the new map that you saw in the beta trailer, secret new mode that has been kept under tight wraps, new XP events, and/or new level caps that you’ll see next week, so we definitely won’t do that.”
Everything Treyarch has mentioned here is exciting, but a “secret new mode” definitely is the most attention-grabbing morsel of news here. What could it be? Well, we could theorize just about anything, but one possible guess is an escort mode of some sort—this based on a report from a player who ran into a potentially relevant bug in Domination.
Another possibility is that this will be the new battle royale-style “Blackout” mode. Being as this is so highly anticipated, it seems likely to show up during next week’s beta. On the other hand, does this make sense given that the “secret new mode” has been under “tight wraps?” Maybe not, given that we obviously know all about the existence of the Blackout mode. Of course, they may just mean that the inclusion of the mode in the beta has been kept under wraps.
Speaking about the Blackout mode, Activision COO Coddy Johnson has said, “We teased earlier this week and we saw overwhelmingly positive response to the trailer we put out. I think the fans are really hungry for it. And we see it also on the playtest that we’re doing, both with our own teams and the confidential tests that we bring consumers through. There is this moment-to-moment creation that happens now. Many Call of Duty games in the past were scripted, but in this the players are generating the wild helicopter rides, the takedowns from ATVs and truck beds, the powers and abilities that you find as you move through the map … It’s putting in the hands of the fans this massive experience.”
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 will release on October 12th on PS4, Xbox One and Windows PC. Make sure to pre-order, and keep up with our COD news as you wait for release day!
