As with previous years, E3’s 2019 iteration was chock full of excitement, reveals, and surprise announcements. Previous leaks may have spoiled games like Watch Dogs: Legion and Baldur’s Gate 3, but surprises were still plentiful. We’ve rounded up some of the biggest E3-related surprises here for your perusal.
E3 2019 Games That Stole The Proverbial Show
Some have argued that E3 is losing relevance, but the studios attending still proved they can put on a show. Major publishers like Ubisoft, Square Enix, Bethesda, and even Microsoft were ready to wow gamers with surprise reveals and twists. The presentations may not have always been smooth, but that hardly matters with so many great games on the horizon.
Ghostwire: Tokyo
The Evil Within developer Tango Gameworks unveiled a curious new title during Bethesda’s E3 event. We’re not entirely sure what Ghostwire: Tokyo is, but we’re sure we want to know more. At first blush, the game appears to be a horror-themed co-op survival title set in the titular Japanese city. Between this and Arkane Studios’ Deathloop, Bethesda did very well for its E3 2019 showing.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Sequel
Nintendo had a suitably quiet presence at E3, at least compared to the other headliner companies in attendance. However, the studio’s E3 event still made waves because of one surprise showing. While Nintendo didn’t outright confirm it, it appears The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is getting a sequel. Hopefully Nintendo will have more to share in the near future.
Elden Ring
Thanks to several previous leaks, Elden Ring’s reveal wasn’t a total surprise, but said reveal was still welcomed wholeheartedly. It would also seem the leaks were spot on. Elden Ring is being made by Dark Souls developer From Software with help from author George R.R. Martin. We haven’t seen any gameplay yet, but color us excited nonetheless.
Commander Keen
Most of the entries on this list were welcome surprises greeted with awe and applause. Bethesda’s Commander Keen revival may have gotten applause, but it wasn’t a welcome surprise. It seems Bethesda decided the best way to revive the classic franchise was as a F2P mobile game. Not even Commander Keen creator Tom Hall is ok with what Bethesda’s done to his creation. And to be honest, we don’t blame him.
Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga
We honestly should have seen a new Lego Star Wars game coming, but oh well. Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga bundles together the entire nine-film narrative of Episodes I-IX. And yes, that includes the upcoming Rise of Skywalker film coming later this year. This is likely as close as we’ll ever get to a “definitive” Lego Star Wars experience.
