Activision has finally unveiled their first official look at Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, along with its release date; the 13th of November. However, fans won’t have to wait that long to actually play the game for the first time. An Open Beta is on the way, and a launch date is likely to be announced in less than two weeks, coinciding with the Black Ops Cold War multiplayer reveal.
The Black Ops Cold War Multiplayer Reveal
Today’s Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War ends with a tantalising glimpse of the game’s upcoming multiplayer. (The only section of the trailer which doesn’t feature cutscene or single-player story gameplay.) At the end of that teaser, the trailer reveals that an Open Beta will happen before the full release. Moreover, it reveals that there will be a Black Ops Cold War multiplayer reveal on the 8th of September.
A multiplayer open beta for the game was always likely. However, leaks did indeed reveal the existence of a closed alpha called The Red Door ahead of the official reveal. It’s unclear whether that is the official event title or merely a placeholder meant to disguise it. Whatever the case, if this alpha event is still planned, then an Open Beta may not be far behind. With less than three months before the game’s actual launch, these events may well occur relatively soon. As such, there’s a high likelihood that Activision will reveal the start date for one or both events in the multiplayer reveal.
It’s been confirmed that Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will feature a Zombies mode, although it’s currently unknown whether this would be playable in an Open Beta. More likely, such an event will focus on the core multiplayer modes. It’s also currently unknown how the game’s multiplayer will interact with Call of Duty: Warzone. Given Warzone’s enormous success, it’s likely that Activision will want to keep Warzone evolving alongside Black Ops Cold War. That could well mean the launch of a new map, for example, which may offer players a space to use Cold War Operators and weapons. For now, however, fans will have to wait and see.
