For the first time in the long history of the Call of Duty franchise, a game’s Zombies mode is now free-to-play… at least for the next week. Activision and Treyarch have launched a new Free Access Week for the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Zombies mode, giving players full access for free.
Black Ops Cold War’s Zombies Free Access Week
The new Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Zombies Free Access Week began shortly after the rollout of the Mid-Season Update; the first major update to the game since the launch of Season One. It also overlaps with the first Double Weapon XP Weekend of 2021, which is live until Tuesday the 19th. The Free Access Week will continue for a few days after that, ending on the Thursday 21st.
Although Free Access events have been relatively common in Call of Duty for some time, especially for the last Modern Warfare, such an event has never been held for a Zombies mode. Interestingly, the event doesn’t limit access to only certain parts of the mode, either; something which previous Free Access events have done. Players can get full access to the Black Ops Cold War Zombies mode, even including the new content added in the Mid-Season Update.
Indeed, this content serves as an added incentive for players to take part. After all, it contains the first major update to Zombies since the mode first launched, including two new game modes. Cranked is a variant of the standard Zombies mode where players must keep killing zombies to stop a timer counting down to their inevitable deaths. The second mode, Onslaught, is a two-player horde mode of sorts which is exclusive to PlayStation consoles. This mode uses the game’s existing selection of multiplayer maps rather than the core Zombies map.
