Tomorrow, Gearbox will be revealing a rather mysterious “Celebration of Togetherness,” which is currently due to premiere in 13 hours’ time on YouTube. Following the announcement, there was widespread speculation as to what it might be about. Some were hoping that it could be referring to Borderlands 3 cross-play. However, Randy Pitchford has now confirmed that that is not the case.
Borderlands 3 Cross-Play Won’t be Available at Launch
Earlier today, Pitchford responded to speculation about the upcoming Celebration of Togetherness. Writing on Twitter, he said; “Some folks may be speculating that this thing tomorrow may be about cross play. Tomorrow’s thing is awesome, but *not* about cross-play. But, Good News: we are committed to supporting cross-play for Borderlands 3 with our partners as soon as practicable after launch.”
Many fans will no doubt be disappointed to learn that tomorrow’s reveal won’t be for Borderlands 3 cross-play. However, that was always something of an outside possibility. At this stage, the game’s split-screen multiplayer functionality looks to be a likely contender, or the event could simply be a general multiplayer gameplay reveal. As such, Pitchford’s confirmation is actually relatively good news. While fans won’t be getting cross-play at launch, he did confirm that Gearbox is actively working on implementing it. “We are committed to cross-play on as many platforms as possible,” he went on to clarify.
No doubt Gearbox is having to negotiate with the major platform companies to get permission for cross-play. Typically, Microsoft has been open to the idea, while Sony has been against it. However, Sony has seemingly been more willing to allow cross-play in some recent cases, so there is certainly a possibility that the feature could eventually come to Borderlands 3 post-launch. For now, fans should tune in to the YouTube premiere of the Celebration of Togetherness; due to premiere at 7 AM PT / 10 AM ET / 3 PM BST. While it may not be cross-play, it’s still likely to be an exciting reveal!
