Just as promised following the release of a teaser last week, Gearbox today released a full reveal trailer for “Moxxi’s Heist of the Handsome Jack”; the first major Borderlands 3 DLC. Due to release on the 19th of December, the DLC will feature a new story, a new area, and by the looks of the trailer, plenty more besides. Although it probably won’t actually include the return of Handsome Jack himself, the villain’s appearance in holograms and on screens thoughout the new area does suggest that fans may at least get to hear his voice; perhaps via pre-recorded messages, for instance.
The First Borderlands 3 DLC: Moxxi’s Heist of the Handsome Jackpot
“Moxxi’s assembling a crew to plunder a derelict space station casino and you’ve proven yourself worthy of joining her ragtag team of ‘experts,'” explains Gearbox; “Successfully battle your way through Hyperion security forces and crazed casino-goers to reach a safe loaded with Eridium, cash, and all-new Legendary loot!”
Moxxi’s Heist of the Handsome Jackpot will be the first campaign DLC release for Borderlands 3. Until now, Gearbox has only released free events, or smaller free content packs like Takedown at Maliwan’s Blacksite. This expansion will be larger and will not be free – players will need to purchase the DLC unless they already have a Season Pass or the game’s Super Deluxe Edition. Once the DLC is available, players can tackle it at almost any point during their playthough. The new area will scale to be level-appropriate, regardless of what level players might be. All you need is to have access to Sanctuary III, something which occurs only a few hours into the game.
Although details about what players will find inside are hazy for the time being, the DLC will see the return of Hyperion enemies, including the security robots which were a staple of Borderlands 2. There will also be new boss-fights, Legendary gear, and cosmetics. Gearbox has yet to detail what the new mission content might be, but the announcement post for the DLC does mention; “casino heist missions and new Crew Challenges,” suggesting that the DLC will include both a main story and side mission content. No doubt the studio will start to tease more details from the DLC as we get closer to its December release date.
