Gearbox Software held their PAX East livestream today, after teasing the event yesterday with a mysterious trailer, and there was certainly no shortage of announcements. The biggest of all, of course, was the release of the first official trailer for Borderlands 3; finally confirming that the game really is in development. However, the studio also had a few other new announcements. One of these was the news that the Borderlands: The Handsome Collection will be getting a new (and completely free) Ultra HD texture pack!
Borderlands: The Handsome Collection is Getting an Ultra HD Texture Pack
Borderlands: The Handsome Collection was released back in mid-2015, almost exactly four years ago. The collection includes both Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel! (Along with all of the post-launch content for both titles.) Moreover, both games feature remastered graphics, with 1080p and 60fps with 1-2 players. The collection offers local split-screen multiplayer, certainly a rarity these days, for up to four players. Although this does reduce the frame rate, previous versions of both games had only allowed for two-player split-screen co-op.
According to Gearbox, The Handsome Collection will receive a brand-new texture pack on the 3rd of April. This pack will add new ‘Ultra HD’ graphics, as well as 4K support to both games in the collection. “Borderlands has never looked so handsome!” proclaims Gearbox; “Experience Pandora in all of its PS4 Pro Enhanced, Xbox One X Enhanced, 4K Ultra HD and HDR glory with this free content download!”
The timing is likely a clever move on the part of Gearbox. The announcement, along with the simultaneous release of a Borderlands 3 trailer, is likely to give many fans a reason to return to the old Borderlands games once the patch launches; a perfect opportunity for Gearbox to energise their fan-base and build hype for the upcoming Borderlands 3; a game that will almost certainly have a big presence at E3 in a few months’ time.
