With the PS5 coming out next month, it wouldn’t be surprising if there are some other big changes on the way. Indeed, a leaked email surfaced regarding the launch of a “brand-new PlayStation Store.” What exactly does that mean, and when should you expect it to happen? Let’s take a closer look.
A Leaked Email Announces a “Brand-New PlayStation Store”
Take a look at this tweet from user Wario64 on Twitter:
The text says, “PSN webstore is reportedly getting updated starting Oct 19th for web, Oct 28 for mobile. It will no longer allow users to buy PS3/PSP/Vita content as well as apps/themes/avatars. You’ll have to buy them from the device instead … Wishlist also removed.”
The tweet includes a screenshot of an email that allegedly is from Sony. The email begins, “”Our brand-new PlayStation Store launches on web and mobile on October 19, 2020, and we are making some changes to the content that can be accessed on PS Store via desktop and mobile devices.”
The email then lists the following changes:
- SIE will no longer offer the ability for consumers to purchase:
- PlayStation 3 games and add-ons
- PSP (PlayStation Portable) games and add-ons
- PlayStation Vita games and add-ons
- Apps
- Themes
- Avatars
- The Wishlist feature will be discontinued and any items currently on the consumer’s “Your Wishlist” will be removed.
The email then explains that this applies only to the PS Store “when accessed via a desktop or mobile device.” Apparently, if you are on your PS3, PS Vita or PS4, you will still be able to access the content in question.
Honestly, we kind of hope this isn’t real, because in what way does it benefit anyone? For a “brand-new PlayStation Store,” it seems that it will be less functional than the current one. The email doesn’t describe any new features. But it also has weird spacing and some confusing wording. So maybe it is a draft—or perhaps it is just a fake.
