Information regarding a new ‘Supply Stream’ system for Call of Duty Black Ops 4 has started to trickle in. The system will reportedly act as a replacement for the loot boxes found in previous Call of Duty games. Not only that, but its structure is also influenced by Fortnite’s popular battle pass concept with its use of tiers.
Black Ops 4 Supply Stream System
As of this writing, Activision hasn’t formally announced the Supply Stream system so take the following with a grain of salt. Reports say that a Call of Duty blog post announcing the system was posted and then quickly taken down. However, text from the post was captured and shared, showing a tier-based system not unlike Fortnite’s battle pass.
Using the Supply Stream system, Black Ops 4 players can earn new cosmetic items by progressing through the tiers. Not only that, but Black Ops Pass owners can reportedly “skip” the first 10 tiers of each new content season:
“The brand-new Supply Stream system now grants you new gear as you progress through tiers. While other players are required to reach each tier organically, Black Ops Pass members can skip 10 tiers per season. What’s that mean? In short, you’ll get the chance to own the newest Uniforms, Weapon Variants and Emotes before everybody else.”
Ironically enough, the trend of loot box-based unlocks began in earnest with 2015’s Call of Duty Black Ops 3. For Black Ops 4, it seems Activision is trying out a new unlock system, one which feels less invasive. However, it should once again be stressed that the Supply Stream system hasn’t been technically confirmed as of yet. We do know that CoD Points are also coming to Black Ops 4. There’s a possibility that the CoD Points and Supply Stream system will interact in some fashion.
