During today’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Community Reveal event, there were a cavalcade of new details divulged about the upcoming entry in the popular shooter series. Near the end of the presentation, while discussing a few of the new modes, including the varied Zombies adventures as well as the newly-announced Blackout Battle Royale mode, Treyarch developers slid something nonchalantly into their speech. It was a small, seemingly insignificant mention that they thought we wouldn’t hear, but we did. And it’s going to change up Call of Duty forever.
As it turns out, amid all the spectacle and fervor during the event, we were told that there would not be a single-player campaign. Yes, though there’s going to be a smattering of different game modes such as two different Zombies campaigns, a full-fledged multiplayer mode with plenty of new mechanics, and Blackout, there will be no single-player campaign.
This is a pretty strange turn of events, despite the fact that we already had some sort of idea thanks to rumors and hearsay that this would be happening. Unfortunately, most of us didn’t really believe the series would abandon the core part of its experience to totally focus on multiplayer instead. It appears that’s what the game is turning its attention on going forward, and while there are bots in the new Zombies mode, the main attraction for some players is going away.
The Treyarch team didn’t elaborate any further on this decision, preferring more to hype up the crowd with all the multiplayer gaming options that are available in the game. It remains to be seen whether or not this will be the norm for Call of Duty or Call of Duty: Black Ops going forward, but it’s a safe bet that this is the direction the developers will be pivoting to. It’s a lot cheaper, and as games like Fortnite and PUBG have proven, folks just want to shoot each other online lately. Hopefully this isn’t the way things will be going forward, however, because Call of Duty is at its best when it comes to cinematic adventures.
