Activision and Infinity Ward today released the latest in their series of trailers for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. However, this trailer stands out as the announcement trailer for the upcoming Modern Warfare Alpha; the first chance that many gamers will get to actually give the game a try for themselves. The Alpha will be taking place exclusively on the PlayStation 4, and will feature the new 2v2 Gunfight mode.
The Upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Alpha
“Time to hit up your wingman,” reads the trailer description; “For one weekend only, play the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2v2 Alpha beginning August 23, only on PS4, and prepare for the beta on September 12”. Two weeks ago, Activision announced the formal dates for the upcoming Modern Warfare Beta. However, this is the first announcement for a preceding Alpha, due to take place this weekend.
The Beta is due to begin on the 12th of September in Early Access on the PS4. It will then open to all PS4 owners on the 14th. This Early Access/Open Beta staggered release will subsequently occur again on the 19th of September. However, this time it will be on the Xbox One and PC as well. (Note that the Early Access phase will not apply to the PS4 the second time.)
This announcement reveals that there will also be a Modern Warfare Alpha on the weekend of the 23rd-25th of August. It will be exclusive to the PS4, and it seems from the trailer that it will only feature Gunfight; the new game mode which also featured in the first multiplayer gameplay reveal. Gunfight is a frenetic, fast-paced 2v2 mode which takes place on very small maps with rotating loadouts. Thus far, opinion of the mode among fans seems to be very positive, but this will be the first true test. Of course, as with any Alpha or Beta, players shouldn’t be surprised if they encounter a few bugs or server issues. After all, that’s what such events are for. Interestingly, the Alpha will introduce two new maps which haven’t been shown before; Docks and Speedball.
