In the last year, ray tracing has become increasingly common among new triple-A releases. Last year, there only a few dozen games with ray tracing. Now, it’s rare to see a new major release not include it. As such, it’s no surprise that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will feature ray tracing on PC at launch. However, the game doesn’t stop there. In addition to Modern Warfare ray tracing, the game will include other cutting-edge graphics tech, including Adaptive Shading and NVIDIA Ansel.
Modern Warfare Ray Tracing, Ansel, Adaptive Shading, and More
Ray tracing has been a major step forward for video game graphics, especially as it has become more common in the last year. Although it is still limited to the highest-quality NVIDIA GPUs for now, it is expected to be included on both the PS5 and Xbox Project Scarlett when they launch. As such, it will only continue to become more and more common until it becomes the norm. For their next release, Activision didn’t just incorporate Modern Warfare ray tracing, however.
“In addition to ray tracing and NVIDIA Adaptive Shading,” explains Activision; “two additional technologies are also being implemented into the PC version of Modern Warfare for GeForce PC gamers: NVIDIA Ansel and Highlights.”
The first of these is NVIDIA Adaptive Shading. This feature helps to boost GPU performance by constantly adjusting the rate at which screen areas are shaded. Adaptive Shading often features alongside Ray Tracing, as it reduces the load on the GPU of running such an intensive feature. The other two; Ansel and Highlights, are something else entirely. Ansel is an in-built photo mode which includes filters and other ways to adjust images. Users can share images directly to social media. Highlights, meanwhile, allows users to save short-form video clips. For a fast-paced, graphically-intensive game like Modern Warfare, both of these features are likely to be very useful.
