Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Launches This Friday

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, the so-called “soft reboot,” of Activision’s Modern Warfare series, is now due to launch in less than a week’s time. The highly-anticipated upcoming title will launch on the 25th of October; this coming Friday. The game will feature a single-player story which aims to be the franchise’s most gritty and serious to date. Plus, it will also reboot the classic Spec Ops game mode and more.

The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Release Date

It’s fair to say that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is a strong contender for 2019’s most highly-anticipated game. Ever since it was first revealed, Activision has sought to portray the game as something different than what has come before; a bolder, darker, and more mature story. The current age of gaming is largely defined by opposite extremes; casual multiplayer battle royale titles like Fortnite, Apex Legends, etc. on the one end of the spectrum, and narrative-centric single-player story titles like God of War and Spider-Man on the other. While Black Ops 4 leaned much closer to Fortnite’s camp, this upcoming title is leaning heavily in the opposite direction.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare Release Date Friday

Whether or not Modern Warfare’s story lives up to the hype remains to be seen. Activision and Infinity Ward have sought to portray it as a highly realistic portrayal of warfare. However, Call of Duty certainly has a reputation for glorifying and romanticising warfare; it will take a lot to divorce the series from that reputation. Nevertheless, it’s interesting to see that Activision, who no doubt have access to plenty of market data, seem to think that this is the best way forward. Evidently, the sea change begun by God of War is still very much in effect, at least for now.

When Modern Warfare releases on Friday, it will feature a full story campaign. Plus, it will have the PvE multiplayer Spec Ops mode which has a story of its own. Of course, there will be plenty of multiplayer modes too. These range from Gunfight to large-scale modes like Ground War. However, there’s no confirmation yet whether Modern Warfare will include a battle royale mode. In today’s market, it would be surprising if it doesn’t, but perhaps Activision is hoping to start a sea change of their own, rather than just following the trends.
