It’s been less than two weeks since the launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War earlier this month, but Treyarch isn’t wasting any time, and their first post-launch content will be arriving tomorrow; the Nuketown ’84 map. This redesigned classic should be instantly familiar to anybody who’s familiar with the Black Ops series.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War – Nuketown ’84
Nuketown ’84 will be the first new map to come to Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War since launch; an appropriate choice, given its status as the series’ most recognisable classic multiplayer map. The ’84 iteration adopts a very different style to previous versions of the map, blending 80s punk aesthetics with the map’s original purpose as a nuclear blast testing site. Graffiti, rusted vehicles, and sand-blasted concrete dominate the map, in place of the classic white picket-fences and manicured lawns.
This new map is coming to the game as a bonus of sorts, well ahead of the upcoming launch of Black Ops Cold War Season 1. The game’s first post-launch season is due to officially launch on the 10th of December, in just over two weeks’ time. That first season will include more new maps, along with plenty more content in other areas, such as two new weapons and various new game modes.
Choosing to launch Nuketown ’84 before Season 1 is no doubt meant to keep players engaged in the lead-up to the season launch next month; a slow drip-feed of new content to fill the gap between release and the start of the post-launch content cycle. Given the map’s enduring reputation among series veterans, it’s likely to prove an excellent choice. There are few maps, if any, which have appeared in so many different Call of Duty games in so many different iterations. This latest one should prove to be just as popular, especially with new game modes available to play on it from tomorrow.
