Call of Duty: Warzone has hit another major milestone in terms of its player-count. Shortly after its launch, Warzone attracted enormous attention, accruing millions of players within days. Now, the game has reportedly reached a total of 60 million players! This announcement was made earlier today by Activision who thanked their enormous fan community on social media.
Call of Duty: Warzone Reaches 60 Million Players
Call of Duty: Warzone is now over two months old, and in that time, the game has garnered extremely widespread attention. In contrast to Apex Legends, which enjoyed similarly explosive interest upon launch, the game does not appear to be suffering from a rapid drop-off; instead, Activision and Infinity Ward have been able to continue growing their player-base and keep existing players engaged.
Two weeks after launch, Warzone reached the total of 30 million players. Now, the game has reportedly doubled this figure in the last two months, expanding up to 60 million. It’s likely that the ongoing global lockdown has played a part in this; many gaming services and games have seen increases in player-count while people have been stuck at home. Given that Warzone is free-to-play, it is very likely to have benefitted from this factor.
It remains to be seen whether Warzone’s player-count will start to decline over time, as new games emerge and players’ interests wane. However, as stated before, the game has a strong track record for keeping players engaged. Modern Warfare set a new record for player engagement in the Call of Duty series, for example; its players play more consistently and for longer than the players of any previous Call of Duty this console generation. As such, Warzone is unlikely to see a steep drop-off in the same way that Apex Legends did shortly after launch. Rather, a decline is likely to be slow and drawn-out. If the upcoming Call of Duty 2020 title doesn’t attempt to compete with Warzone (which is likely), Warzone could easily continue to thrive into 2021 at a minimum.
