Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is coming to Playstation 4, Xbox One and PC this year with no classic single player campaign. While the fans were discontent when the facts were announced, the matter went dormant since Treyarch explained that they want to focus on a social experience instead. Now, the studio explains once more that a campaign has no place in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4.
According to Dan Bunting, Co-Head at Treyarch, the studio wanted to focus on what the Black Ops series are most famous about: Zombies and Multiplayer. Given that, a potential campaign would have nothing new to give to the players so it had to be removed entirely from their plans. He stated:
“If you’ve been following the Black Ops series, you’ll know that we never tell a story the same way twice. In the first game, your companion throughout the campaign was a figment of your imagination. In the second game, we told a branching story. And in Black Ops 3 the whole thing was all in the main character’s head. So we’ve always experimented with telling stories in different ways.”
“We’re putting a lot more energy into the parts of the game where our players spend the most time. When you think of Treyarch you think of Zombies and multiplayer, so those are the parts of Black Ops that we want to bring to the forefront.”
Furthermore, he reveals that feedback and speaking your mind as a fan of the Black Ops 4 franchise is important to Treyarch. This is something that they keep in mind and work on even if its negative. Especially if it’s negative:
“Listening to the community takes a lot of patience and understanding. If anyone expresses an opinion, even if it’s negative, you know it’s coming from a place of passion. And we’re constantly updating the game based on player feedback, so being tight with the community helps with that.”
Fans will have to settle with what they’re getting with Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 this year. That includes a co-op Zombies mode, the classic Black Ops multiplayer mode and Blackout, a new battle royale done the “Black Ops way”.
