With the release of Cyberpunk 2077’s new story trailer at E3, fans excited for Cyberpunk were left clamoring for more information. Given that no gameplay was publicly shown at the event; it was generally expected that it might be some time before CD Projekt Red released any more information. However, it now seems that the fans will be getting a lot more information that expected. The studio has launched a new blog series which plans to go frame-by-frame through the story trailer, giving fans insight into the setting of Night City.
The New Cyberpunk 2077 Blog Series
According to CD Projekt Red; “Almost every scene in the E3 trailer tells a story of its own”. That certainly appeared to be the case. The trailer didn’t focus on story or the main character. Instead, it chose to show fans a series of vignettes of life in Night City; highlighting the city’s night-life, gang violence, cybernetics, and lots more besides.
Episode 1
“The E3 2018 trailer is a result of the hard work of the entire development team at CD Projekt Red and is based on concept art done over the years,” states the first blog post; “Every scene is rendered in-engine and offers a great glimpse into the lives of people in Night City.”
The blog’s opening explains that Night City is an independent megacity, entirely run by corporations. It is located in the “Free State of California”, but because it’s independent, it isn’t governed by either US or Californian law; hence why the city is so riven with crime.
Episode 2
The blog’s second entry explains the mass presence of robotics in Night City; “Either mass produced by corporations or put together from stolen trashed pieces of tech, robotics serve a huge role in both economics sectors and are an everyday addition to the life of people in Night City.”; The post goes on to explain that most public transport is also automated.
Episode 3
The third blog post, which is as far as the blog currently goes, examines the “social ladder concept” of Night City. “The verticality of the city represents the social ladder,” it explains; “The social ladder concept can be seen in every aspect of life in Night City. The less fortunate folks, albeit with a less-than-ideal quality of life, still have access to technology thanks to charity shops, which hand out tech to the poor. Old computers are also fairly easy to get a hold of. This is crucial to the overexposure of advertisement and jump-starting people’s dreams, which ultimately keeps them within the borders of Night City.”
It’s currently unknown how many blog entries CD Projekt Red plans to release. However, the first three only cover the first few scenes from the trailer. Expect plenty more to come.
