For quite some time now, rumours have been circulating about the possibility of Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer. Far from being debunked by CD Projekt Red, the studio has actually confirmed that such a mode is a possibility, and even in development to some degree. However, the question of whether it will eventually see release has long had no clear answer. Now, it seems that CD Projekt Red is still unsure about the proposition.
Cyberpunk 2077 Multiplayer is Still an Uncertain Prospect
Speaking with Eurogamer recently, Senior Concept Artist Marthe Jonkers said that the multiplayer team were still in an R&D stage of development; “We are doing R&D into multiplayer,” he explains; “but we’re focusing on single-player experience, and that’s what you’ll get in 2020. It doesn’t mean we’re saying no multiplayer, but it doesn’t mean we’re saying yes either. It’s still an R&D phase.”
Certainly, CD Projekt Red has previously said that if there was to be a Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer mode then it wouldn’t be available at launch. However, Jonkers’ statement gives fans a clearer impression of what stage development on the idea is at. Indeed, it sounds as though CD Projekt Red isn’t yet convinced internally that multiplayer will even work for the game. He went on to state that; “If you add multiplayer functions it has to be right. Immersion is super important for us and we have to make sure everything fits together. The single-player experience, it all fits together. We’re not just going to slap some feature in and that’ll be it.”
Furthermore, he added that CD Projekt Red wouldn’t make any part of Cyberpunk 2077 that wasn’t up to at least “The Witcher standard”. Certainly, this makes sense given the hype surrounding the game. Cyberpunk 2077 is one of the most highly-anticipated games in recent memory. That means that CD Projekt Red has a lot to live up to, and if the game had a subpar multiplayer mode, it might be better to not release it at all. For now, fans will have to wait and see. Even if multiplayer does eventually come to the game, it will certainly be a post-launch addition, giving the studio plenty of time to experiment and work on it.
