Following the reveal of a Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay demo to members of the Polish press, somebody translated a variety of press comments into English and shared them on the game’s official forum. These comments were later shared on NeoGaf. Amongst the new info was the news that there will be Cyberpunk 2077 religions in the game’s setting. In fact, CD Projekt Red said that they wouldn’t avoid offending sensibilities with their portrayal of religion.
How CD Projekt Red is Approaching the Design of Cyberpunk 2077 Religions
“Religions are still very present in Night City,” reads one of the translated comments; “Our vision of Cyberpunk is not to describe an alternative world but a continuation of our world. Some things will look like our current reality. For example, Christianity is present in the game and will even have a faction.”
This is certainly something which the studio hasn’t ever touched on in the past. Indeed, fans may be happy to learn that religion will receive the same critical treatment that corporations, gangs, and other forces will in Night City; i.e. CD Projekt Red won’t be presenting a sanitised version of Christianity in order to avoid offending anybody. In fact, when asked by a journalist about whether the presence of religion could cause a scandal, a CD Projekt Red representative reportedly responded; “We will not avoid any subject, even if they may offend the sensitivity of some. We are not here to say whether it is good or bad.”
This is probably the best way to approach designing the Cyberpunk 2077 religions. After all, in a game where themes like corporate abuse of power, governmental corruption, and gang crime are so prevalent, it would be bizarre if religions were exempt. Especially given that Night City is set in the U.S., where organised religion has a significant degree of political and social influence. Thus far, CD Projekt Red hasn’t offered any looks in-game at their portrayal of religion. However, it’s possible that fans may get a look in the upcoming gameplay demo.
