Rumors that God of War 5 pre-production may already be underway have been circulating for a while. However, fans now have an even stronger indication that work on the next game has begun. Yesterday, God of War’s director, Cory Barlog, posted a seemingly innocuous Tweet. However, in it he mentioned having attended a; “4 hour script notes discussion.”
Is the God of War 5 Script Already Underway?
“I have pretty much had my brain in stasis during my time off,” posted Cory Barlog; “but today I did a 4 hour script notes discussion”. While it’s theoretically possible that the discussion was for some other project, the most likely topic for it is definitely the next God of War.
I have pretty much had my brain in stasis during my time off but today i did a 4 hour script notes discussion.
Fun, though I feel like my brain just ran a 10k in a thong speedo during a catagory 5 hurricane. 🌪
I think i should have mentally stretched first.

A few weeks ago, Santa Monica Studios posted new job listings for concept artists on their website; specifically, artists to design new gods and other characters. That was the first concrete indication that the studio had started work on God of War 5. However, this may be an even stronger indication. Writing the script is one of the first stages of developing a game, and it would be strange if Cory Barlog wasn’t at the heart of that development.
Barlog has previously stated that he has plans for at least five additional God of War titles, and that fans won’t have to wait so long for the next installment; because so much of the latest God of War’s development was spent building a new engine. Now that the engine has been created, that work won’t need to be repeated for each new game. It will still likely be 1-2 years before fans hear any formal announcements for God of War 5. However, as the studio has chosen to skip any post-launch content or DLC, there is nothing obstructing the developers from getting started on the next installment right away.
