Yesterday, Ubisoft released a surprise teaser trailer. Rather than explicitly say what the trailer is teasing, Ubisoft has simply said that they will be making an announcement during the Game Awards later today. The trailer is clearly following on from the ending of Far Cry 5, and seems to suggest that a new release will be set in a post-apocalyptic version of Hope County. While fans were speculating about whether this would be Far Cry 6, it seems that question has now been answered by a leak.
What Are the Chances That Ubisoft Announces Far Cry 6 Today?
The choice of setting is not entirely surprising. Far Cry 5’s nuclear ending was divisive, to say the least, and seemed to leave a lot unresolved. Moreover, around four months ago, Greg Bryk (the voice actor for Joseph Seed) teased the character’s return on social media; this prompted rumours that Ubisoft was working on story DLC for Far Cry 5. Now, it seems that it may actually have been for a completely new game. Following yesterday’s teaser, fans began speculating about whether this would be Far Cry 6 or merely more DLC for Far Cry 5. As it turns out, the new game could have more in common with Blood Dragon or Far Cry Primal.
Earlier today, the cover art and title of “Far Cry New Dawn,” leaked online; depicting what seems to be an overgrown and ruined Hope County and Joseph Seed strapped to a derelict car. One of the characters on the cover holds the saw-blade crossbow which was revealed in the teaser trailer. This appears to confirm the suspicions that the game takes place relatively soon after the end of Far Cry 5, but in a post-apocalyptic setting.

Given that this isn’t Far Cry 6, it seems likely that this game is more akin to the smaller projects which Ubisoft has often done between the Far Cry core titles, like Blood Dragon and Far Cry Primal. As such, the game likely uses the same engine and a similar map to Far Cry 5. However, it looks to be a very different take on the Hope County setting. Fans should tune in to the Game Awards this evening to see Ubisoft’s official announcement. It’s unknown how much they plan to talk about, but they’re likely to release a full trailer and maybe even show some gameplay for this upcoming game.
