A few days ago, Creative Assembly released their latest studio update; an insight for fans into what the studio’s various teams are working on. The update teased quite a lot, including no less than three secret projects, and the possible inclusion of Bretonnia in the upcoming Total War: Warhammer 2 DLC. However, the studio did give one thing away; one of their aforementioned secret projects is the as-yet unannounced next Total War Saga.
The Next Total War Saga: What Comes After Thrones of Britannia?
Total War Saga is a spin-off series of sorts, currently with only one entry. The first Total War Saga, Thrones of Britannia, launched in May of 2018 for PC. The game followed the format of the series’ traditional historical titles. It allows players to take control of a number of factions in 9th century England; Wessex, the Vikings, the Gaelic Clans, etc. Despite being a smaller project which made use of the existing engine from Total War: Attila; Thrones of Britannia received positive reviews and even won “Best Strategy Game” at The Independent Game Developers’ Association Awards 2018.
Given the recent focus of Creative Assembly on fantasy titles, with the launch and success of both Total War: Warhammer games; Thrones of Britannia seemed to cater towards those fans who preferred the older, historical titles. Although Creative Assembly will be returning to a real-world setting with Total War: Three Kingdoms, there are widespread rumours that Total War: Warhammer 3 is currently in development. (Certainly, it’s known that the studio’s Fantasy Team is working on something big.) As such, many fans did wonder whether “Total War Saga” would become a spin-off series.
Total War Saga 2 Has Been Confirmed
That suspicion was confirmed in the latest studio update, which states that the next Total War Saga is already in development. “This week we passed milestone one on this game,” said the studio; “and we’re starting to see more and more of what it will look like. We’re becoming incredibly excited to be able to share more about this project in the coming year – stay tuned.”
Nothing is currently known about the second Total War Saga. However, it’s safe to assume that it will be another historical title. Moreover, it seems likely to follow a similar model to Thrones of Britannia; i.e. choosing a smaller geographic area to focus on. While Rome and Medieval Total War spanned whole swathes of Europe and North Africa, Thrones of Britannia only takes place in the British Isles. For now, fans of the first saga will have to wait for an announcement, but it sounds as though news could come relatively soon, perhaps after the release of Three Kingdoms in late May.
