For some time, especially since rumours of a multiplayer mode began to surface, fans have occasionally made comparisons between Cyberpunk 2077 and GTA V. Both games feature a large and primarily urban open-world. Both titles also have a separate open multiplayer environment (if the rumours prove true, of course). In a recent interview, Level Designer Miles Tost addressed this comparison and gave his thoughts.
Cyberpunk 2077 and GTA V: An Accurate Comparison?
Miles Tost recently spoke with GamingBolt, and one of the topics they discussed was the comparison to GTA V. Specifically, if players would be able to “goof around” in the open world. According to Tost, he understands the comparison but doesn’t necessarily agree with it; “Our game will provide a lot of side activities for you to engage in outside the main quest,” he explains; “whether it’s side quests or encounters waiting for you on the streets of Night City, it will be crafted by us with a lot of love and care. Whilst it’s very humbling to us to have our game be compared to GTA, with Cyberpunk 2077, we are striving for a different, story-driven experience…”
Story may be far more dominant in Cyberpunk 2077 than in GTA V. However, that doesn’t mean players won’t be able to do what they want outside of that story. Tost went on to add; “That’s not to say we will stop players from goofing around.”
Although the setting of Cyberpunk 2077 may look more comparable to a game like GTA, it seems that the real structure and story underpinning that will be along the lines of what players have seen from the studio’s other titles. Given the shift to first-person, and the dramatic shift in aesthetic and genre, it’s not as immediately easy to compare the game to The Witcher 3, for example. Nevertheless, players probably shouldn’t go into the game when it launches expecting GTA. Rather, they should expect the sort of story-driven RPG CD Projekt is known for.
