According to a detailed report posted on Reddit summarising a recent developer Q&A which CD Projekt Red held in Poland, the Cyberpunk 2077 main quest plus the biggest side quests may actually be a bit shorter than the length of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. However, the devs believe that it will have much better replayability. Plus, they didn’t count all of the smaller side-quests and optional encounters.
The Length of the Cyberpunk 2077 Main Quest
“In terms of length, main story of the Cyberpunk 2077 might be a little shorter then in The Witcher 3,” reads the report on Reddit; “but will make up for it with much higher replayability. However at the same time they still didn’t measured the length of the entire game with all the encounters and smaller quests accounted for, only the main story and major sidequests.”
It sounds as though the length to which the developers were referring is how long it will take for most people to beat the game. After all, most people aren’t completionists. Most gamers will complete the main story and most of the more important side activities. While the report doesn’t mention a specific time, howlongtobeat puts The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s ‘Main Story’ at 51 hours. This rises to 103 hours including ‘Extras’ and 173 hours for ‘Completionist’. Cyberpunk 2077 could be slightly less than at least the first two figures.
However, the note about replayability is an important one. After all, CD Projekt Red has already shown off in trailers some of the ways in which players will be able to approach missions in different ways. (To say nothing of the many story and dialogue decisions.) While The Witcher 3 did feature some important decisions, most of the main story was relatively linear. If the huge number of different possible approaches lives up to the hype, then Cyberpunk 2077 could boast seriously impressive replayability for a story-driven RPG. By comparison, for instance, Skyrim’s ‘Main Story’ takes roughly 33 hours to beat. However, many gamers have many hundreds of hours in that game thanks to its high degree of replayability. Cyberpunk 2077 could achieve enduring long-term success for the same reason.
