After more than half a decade in development, CD Projekt Red has announced that Cyberpunk 2077 has officially gone gold; meaning that the game’s development has finished. There is still over a month before its release, but at this stage, it seems that the finished product is essentially ready for launch.
Cyberpunk 2077 Has Gone Gold
Cyberpunk 2077 was initially due to release much earlier this year, all the way back in February. The launch date was first delayed to September, and then to November shortly thereafter, effectively giving CD Projekt Red around seven months of extra development time. At long last, however, that development has now come to an end. Internally, work is likely still ongoing for the game’s post-launch features. (Including the next-gen upgrade which is due to launch in early 2021). However, Cyberpunk 2077 itself is seemingly ready to launch.
That this announcement is being made more than a month before the release date is a good sign. If the game was plagued by bugs, for example, it’s likely that CD Projekt Red would work on it until the absolute last minute. An earlier announcement that the game has “gone gold,” is more likely to indicate a trouble-free launch, in general. Although, given the two delays to the game’s release date already, that was always likely to be the case. Indeed, the high-profile, bug-ridden launches of games like Fallout 76 and others have clearly shown the industry that gamers would prefer a game be delayed than launched with problems.
Fans can look forward to Cyberpunk 2077 finally releasing on PS4, Xbox One, and PC on the 19th of November. The game will be fully backwards compatible with next-gen consoles. Indeed, it is also supported on Xbox’s Smart Delivery program, allowing players who buy it on the current-gen to play their copy on the Xbox Series X for free. However, CD Projekt Red is also working on a next-gen upgrade; one which is designed to take full advantage of the new consoles’ higher-grade hardware. That update will be available as a free download sometime in early 2021.
