When it was first announced – prior to this year’s series of delays – Cyberpunk 2077 was originally intended to launch solely on PC, Xbox One, and PS4. However, due to the many delays, it is now launching after the release of the new console generation. As such, there have been concerns among some gamers about how well it will actually run on past-gen. Fortunately, reports indicate that it runs very well on both.
Cyberpunk 2077 Performance on Consoles
During CD Projekt’s most recent quarterly investor call, joint-CEO Adam Kicinski responded to a question about Cyberpunk 2077’s performance on older consoles. “Of course, [performance is] a bit lower than on pros, but surprisingly good,” he said; “I would say, for a huge world. So, bit lower, but very good. That’s the answer.”
This shouldn’t necessarily be surprising given that Cyberpunk 2077 was meant to launch on older consoles to begin with. Had it actually launched on its original release date, the next-gen consoles would still be almost a year away. Indeed, CD Projekt Red recently released gameplay videos showcasing both Xbox and PlayStation gameplay, and highlighting the differences between current- and next-gen consoles. While there is a clear graphical improvement on the new consoles, and load times are likely much better, the older console gameplay is still very high quality.
Kicinski went on to explain that performance on the Xbox One and PS4 has actually been a focus for the developers in recent weeks. “I mean, we had those extra three weeks,” he said; “and we achieved a lot by – within this final stretch. So, we believe that the game is performing great on every platform […]”
Hopefully, this encourages players who might be holding off buying the game until they get a next-gen console. After all, while the game is fully backwards compatible with the new consoles, an actual next-gen upgrade won’t arrive until early 2021. Fortunately, this upgrade will be completely free for anybody who owns the game, irrespective of which console generation they own.
