Danganronpa Developer Shows Off Gameplay Footage of Zanki Zero

The team behind the gripping Danganronpa series of games has revealed the first gameplay footage for its new title, Zanki Zero. While we’ve already had a couple of trailers for the game previously, this is the first time we’ve seen its combat system in action. Though it sports the same first-person perspective as the Danganronpa games, its combat is actually not turn-based like you’d expect.

The brief gameplay footage for Zanki Zero: Last Beginning was revealed by the official Japanese Twitter page. It showcases a portion of the first-person dungeon crawling aspects, similar to that of the Etrian Odyssey series from Atlus. Where it differs from that is that all battles seamlessly take place in the dungeon without transferring to a separate battle screen.

More importantly, Zanki Zero is not turn-based like we mentioned but instead opts for real-time action combat. The player is able to attack the enemy whenever they want – in this case, a goat – and dodge, too. This allows the player to move about the grid-based map, dodging enemy attacks and returning with a counter when they see an appropriate opening.

As seen in the above gameplay footage for Zanki Zero, the player is also able to utilize the different members in their party’s special abilities to charge a powerful attack against opponents. In addition, it is possible to attack enemies in such a way that it breaks off various parts of their body for better materials before outright killing them off. Enemies seem to have varied AI, as seen with the goat attempting to escape after losing a part of its body.

The game currently has an unknown release date for the West, but we do know that it will be releasing on PS4 and PC.
