Being in the Madden 99 Club once is no easy feat, but twice in two straight years? That’s what Green Bay Packers wide receiver Davante Adams achieved. On Monday, ESPN and EA’s Madden announced that Davante Adams was the highest-rated WR in the upcoming game with a 99. He tops a list that includes major stars such as DeAndre Hopkins, Tyreek Hill, Stefon Diggs, and Julio Jones. In recognition of the honor, Adams received some very special gifts for his 99 OVR Madden 22 rating.
Davante Adams presented with Madden 22 rating gifts
Each year, EA’s Madden video game awards the best players in the game a 99 overall rating. That was the Madden 22 rating for Davante Adams, who topped the game’s wide receiver ratings. To honor his accomplishment, he received a nice surprise as he was out enjoying some golf with friends.
Another of his close friends drove onto the course in a customized yellow golf cart decorated with Madden logos, honking its horn. Adams soon learned what all the commotion was about as he was presented with his gifts.
In the video clip below, Adams officially received a handwritten note from John Madden himself, welcoming him to the club. Along with that, Adams received a sweet 99 Club gold necklace and a special trophy which he used to hang the necklace on.
“This is a blessing. Shout out to everybody involved. Everybody at EA. Shout out to Madden. Shout out my boys for surprising me…This is an incredible, incredible surprise. I was caught off guard today,” the Packers star said.
The 99 Club membership was Adams’ second straight as he gained entry during the previous season. His quarterback Aaron Rodgers presented him with the honor.
Adams’ NFL stats for the 2020 season included him participating in 14 games with 115 receptions for 1,374 yards and 18 touchdowns. He was also a Pro Bowl selection for the fourth time in his career.
There was recent speculation that Adams may no longer benefit from having his star quarterback in Green Bay. Rumors of an Aaron Rodgers retirement circulated, even making Adams’ future with the team uncertain. However, recent reports suggest Rodgers and the Packers are reworking his deal to bring him back this season.
Who else will be in the 99 Club?
On Sunday (July 25), the first Madden ratings for the new game arrived with a handful of star players and notable rookie ratings. ESPN began presenting top 10 lists for Madden 22 ratings on Monday, July 26, with the top 10 receivers list. That brought out Davante Adams as the first official member of the coveted 99 Club in Madden.
Each day, a new top 10 list for a position will arrive. With each list could potentially come more of the 99 Club members. However, it’s unlikely there will be more than five or six total members of the club to start the season.
Based on last year’s ratings towards the end of the season, it would seem that the Los Angeles Rams’ Aaron Donald and Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes are shoe-ins for the club. Other potential entries include New England Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore and the Tennessee Titans running back, Derrick Henry.
