Dishonored developer Arkane Studios took to the stage during Bethesda’s E3 press event to unveil its newest game: Deathloop. Judging from its debut trailer, Deathloop looks like a crazy action-packed shooter experience complete with some Groundhog Day-style time-travel shenanigans.
Deathloop Debut Trailer
According to Deathloop developer Arkane Lyon, the game is set during “a time of madness.” Players are transported to a frigid island called Black Reef which has seen better days. Once hailed as a paradise, Black Reef has been gutted by murderous rioters who now roam the island in force.
Two master assassins named Julianna and Colt also find themselves on the island, and they seem hell-bent on killing each other. However, there’s a bit of a twist. Whenever one manages to kill the other, time suddenly resets, forcing both assassins to relive the same day over again. This is likely what the titular “Deathloop” refers to. Narration from the trailer also reveals that Colt wants to break this time-reset cycle while Julianna revels in its chaos.
The trailer doesn’t include any actual gameplay, and Arkane Lyon was careful not to reveal how said gameplay will function. Will Deathloop be a sort of narrative-focused competitive game? Will players control both Colt and Julianna in different single-player scenarios? At the very least, it looks like Deathloop will feature supernatural powers, AI enemies, and a whole bunch of guns. Chances are it will also feature the same slick gameplay which Arkane refined in the Dishonored series.
As of this writing, Deathloop doesn’t have a release date or confirmed list of platforms. Hopefully Arkane will have more to share (like actual gameplay) in the near future.
