Destiny 2: Bungie Talks About the Fate of Gambit in Year 3

Earlier this month, Luke Smith (Game Director at Bungie) released three parts of his Director’s Cut blog-post on Bungie’s website detailing about the past, the present, and the future of Destiny franchise. Part One was mainly focused on the past of Destiny 2 (starting with Black Armory). He also revealed that Bungie will be removing either Gambit Classic or Gambit Prime in Year 3 of Destiny 2. Part Two was detailing about the RPG element and how Destiny 2 will evolve this year with Shadowkeep. Last part of Director’s Cut was detailed about the evolving world of Destiny 2 and major Crucible changes coming this fall.

Is Bungie Removing Gambit?

We read in one of Luke Smith’s blog-post, he said, “In the future, we’re going to have to make a choice: Which Gambit is the Highlander of Gambits. Prime or Classic. This isn’t just about removing stuff from Destiny 2 — but the game cannot grow infinitely forever –it’s about focusing refinements and evolutions to the Gambit ecosystem. We think Gambit is sweet and deserves more ongoing support and we want to ultimately focus that support on whichever mode ends up being the Highlander. There can be only one.”

So, this means that one of the Gambit Activities is getting removed this year or the next? Well, in an interview with GamesRadar, Design Lead Ben Wommack and Community Manager David Dague (DeeJ) went into detail on when this change will occur in Destiny 2. They said:

Wommack: Gambit and Gambit Prime, which are both available to New Light players, are not going anywhere anytime soon. That’s speaking to the concept that, at some point, Destiny is a finite thing. It’s an evolving world we’re going to have to refine, and never stop refining. At some point, just like with Crucible where we’re changing the playlists, we’ll have to change up how Gambit and Gambit Prime work. Don’t expect that to happen around when Shadowkeep launches, though.

Dague: Both of those activities will be available throughout Destiny 2 Year 3.

So, we can safely say that both of the Gambit activities will stay, for at least this year (Year 3). Who knows, maybe we’ll be getting Destiny 3 next year which means a complete reboot of the franchise. What are your thoughts on this? Let us know in comments!

Destiny 2: Shadowkeep will be hitting PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, on October 1, 2019, and later in November on Google Stadia.
