Destiny 2: Bungie Explains How Chalice of Opulence System Works

One of the new systems included in Destiny 2’s Season of Opulence involves an item called the Chalice of Opulence. With the Chalice, players can enter the new Menagerie activity and decide which loot they’ll earn as a reward. In a recent weekly blog post, Bungie explained exactly how the Chalice of Opulence will function.

According to Bungie’s post, each player will only have to earn their Chalice of Opulence once through an introductory questline. Once they have the Chalice, they can freely share it across all characters on their account. Before entering the Menagerie, a player can slot specific types and colors of a new rune currency into the Chalice. These runes will dictate the type and attached perks of the loot players earn for finishing the Menagerie activity.

Players will earn runes via a number of different methods, including the following:

  • Completing new Season of Opulence weekly bounties
  • Opening up weekly chests in the Nessus Barge (a new patrol space?)
  • Using a new consumable which awards a rune for completing a strike, Gambit match, or Crucible match
    • If multiple players in a fireteam use the consumable, each player can potentially earn multiple runes from a single activity completion

Players can also earn a second Chalice-specific currency called Imperials. These Imperials are used to upgrade the Chalice of Opulence and thus enhance Menagerie rewards earned from its use. When a Chalice upgrade is unlocked, the players also gets to choose what type of upgrade it is. Potential upgrades include additional powerful drops from the Menagerie, more frequent rune drops, and additional rune slots on the Chalice.

Similar to runes, Imperials are earned by completing specific tasks and activities, including the following:

  • Weekly bounties
  • New Season of Opulence-specific Triumphs
  • Special consumables
  • Chalice upgrades

Through the Chalice system, Bungie wants to offer a balanced system of targeted reward grinding. Players still need to work for their rewards, but thanks to the runes they’ll know exactly what they’re working towards.
