Destiny 2 Developer Bungie Files Trademark for Something Called “Matter”

It would seem that Destiny series creator Bungie has another unannounced project in the works. A recently filed EU trademark listing reveals that the studio is working on a new gaming project called “Matter.”

Destiny Developer Files Matter Trademark

The trademark filing, which was found and shared on the gaming forum ResetEra, was submitted by a UK-based law firm that represents Bungie’s interests (Bungie is based in the United States). The filing references “video game software” and “electronic games services provided by means of the internet or other communication network”. However, it might be a bit premature to assume that Matter is in fact a new game.

What could Destiny developer Bungie's new Matter project be?

Bungie submitted the above logo along with the trademark. However, the logo provides no further context on what exactly Matter is. For all intents and purposes, it is most likely a game, but it could also be a gaming-related service. The trademark also potentially involves a publishing deal. As part of the deal, Chinese company NetEase invested $100 million into Bungie to make non-Destiny projects. Matter could very well be the first of those projects, though again, it’s all speculation at this point.

It seems unlikely that Bungie would want to create a storefront-type service like Steam, but it is technically possible. Another possibility is that Matter will be some sort of mobile app or game, or even an esports-related service. Matter might also have nothing to do with the NetEase deal, simply being a brand new game or IP that Bungie us hoping to get off the ground.

As for Destiny 2, Bungie is still supporting the flagship title in full earnest. The studio just recently confirmed that Destiny 2’s Shattered Throne dungeon experience will have a specific timetable of availability. Also, based on feedback it received, Bungie will be fine-tuning Destiny 2’s Iron Banner event to make it more appealing for casual endgame players.
