Amid all the E3 chaos that’s going on this week, Bungie followed through on a promise it made during the initial unveiling of Destiny 2’s Forsaken expansion by releasing a brand new trailer which sheds light on Forsaken’s new story campaign. However, it’s unlikely that fans were expecting a story reveal that would be quite as dark as Forsaken’s new story trailer wound up being.
Spoilers for Destiny 2’s Forsaken expansion follow!
The trailer begins with a close-up shot of Cayde-6’s face. For those who don’t know, Cayde-6 is an NPC voiced by Nathan Fillion who has become a beloved mainstay of the Destiny franchise, mainly thanks to his ability to inject a little snark and humor into the game’s otherwise super-serious world. Of course, in the trailer, we see none of Cayde-6’s usual levity or bravado, the look on his face is more one of confusion or disbelief. The camera pans and we see that Cayde-6 is kneeling amidst the aftermath of what looks like a pretty intense battle, and then suddenly, out of nowhere, his Ghost is shot and destroyed from off-screen.
As the camera pans further, we see that Cayde-6 is surrounded by the Scourge Barons, the elite members of Forsaken’s new enemy faction. There’s also a central hooded figure holding Cayde’s signature Ace of Spades hand cannon. The viewer is given a few precious seconds to notice that the hooded figure’s glowing eyes denote him as a member of Destiny 2’s Awoken race before he aims the gun at Cayde and pulls the trigger. In the final moments of the trailer, the hooded figure pulls his hood back, revealing that he is in fact Uldren, crown prince of the Awoken whom players first met in the original Destiny (Uldren wasn’t a big fan of Guardians in the first game and it seems his opinions haven’t changed much).
Naturally fans are abuzz with speculation in the wake of the trailer’s debut. Is Cayde-6 really dead for good? It certainly seems that way considering Uldren was smart enough to destroy his Ghost first (thus meaning Cayde can’t be resurrected). We’ll have to wait until the Forsaken expansion launches on September 4 to find out the true fate of our favorite Hunter NPC.
Along with the Forsaken expansion, Bungie is also releasing three additional mini-expansions which are gathered up in a new Annual Pass and will be released throughout late 2018 and 2019.
